Prionocidaris glandulosa de Meijere 1904 |
|
Family: Cidaridae-Cidarinae |
Order: Cidaroida |
|
|
Locality: Philippines; Siquijor, 250 feet, 2006 |
Dimensions: 29 Ø x 16 mm |
Remarks:
These sea urchins have darker genital plates showing a star-shaped figure,
which is very conspicuous. Mortensen in his "A Monograph of the
Echinoidea, I, Cidaroidea," descibes on p. 461 ff" and the
"Key to the species Prionocidaris" some features, namely white
spots or stripes on the collar and slightly upwards curved primary spines,
which are missing here (or have I to use a microscope?). Following the key on
page 436, a collar without spots and stripes should belong to Prionocidaris
bispinosa. Under "colour" Mortensen mentions the primary spines
as banded in their outer half with purplish-red and white. Apparently there
are spines without such bands. |
